HIDDEN , the new album from These New Puritans, Not what you might expect.
I liked Beat Pyramid, It was aggressive, unkempt, edgy and ramshackle, barreling around your eardrums like a ketamine fueled squat party at 5am. Hidden, is a much more nuanced album, tribal and raw in parts, but melancholic and restrained in equal measures.
The sparse use of synths against fractured rolling beats and orchestral arrangements works well. I can hear a lot of Phillip Glass and Steve Reich in there, and that's by no means a bad thing. The more i listen, the more i find. It's not a crowd pleasing record, which makes it all the more refreshing a listen. Great stuff.
(shame about the album artwork)
